In pre independence period Marathi language was dominate in the north Karnataka especially in Belgaum District. There was a shortage of trained teachers in Kannada schools and trainers in Kannada Training Institutes. In this way when there was no possibility of Kannada environment Shri B.S. Hanchinal dared to open Kannada teachers training Institute in Belgaum. He had a far sight that the development of Kannada language was possible when a team of Kannada teachers were trained. So Shri. Hanchinal Teachers expressed his intention before the managing committee of those days in 1939 A.D.

The way of S.S. Basavanal Institute’s Progress
Establishment
The first Teachers Training Institute was started on 12-6-1940 A.D. with the kind permission of The Public Education Officer. The Institute was named K.P.T. College that time.
InaugurationSir Mirja Ismail the Divan of Mysore Province inaugurated this Institute. Honorable Shri B.S. Hanchinal teacher was the first Principal of the Institute.
